Nestling snugly amongst the rugged cliffs of the majestic Atlantic coast sits Ilfracombe - its charming natural harbour and elegant Victorian architecture continuing to make it as popular today as it has been since the 1830's. With its shops, cafes and historic maritime pubs, the bustling harbour has a continental atmosphere and fishing vessels jostle for space alongside the bobbing yachts. Pleasure trips are always on offer during the summer season and Ilfracombe is one of the ports used by the M.S Oldenburg on its regular passenger services to Lundy Island. The town is a consistent winner of Britain in Bloom with the colourful displays brightening up the streets and seafront. The Landmark Theatre overlooking the seafront is North Devon's newest and finest arts and entertainment complex, offering a year-round programme of events. The award-winning Ilfracombe Museum displays a fascinating selection of curios. Continually increasing in popularity are the town's Victorian celebrations held each June to commemorate the town's heritage. Locals don costume and turn back the clocks with a series of events including pageants, street fairs and a grand costume ball. Walkers and nature lovers are well catered for in Ilfracombe. The stunning Torrs walks following the coastal footpath to Lee have been described as some of the finest walks in England. The unique Tunnels Beaches provide safe bathing areas with secluded beaches and pools, accessed through tunnels quarried beneath the cliffs. To the East the pretty cove of Hele Bay is a young explorers paradise of rock pools and sandy inlets for a perfect day out. |
